7. Along Van der Boechorststraat

After the bridge turn right immediately. Walk along the footpath at the right hand side of Van der Boechorststraat. Cross A.J. Ernst van Bassenstraat and stop at the childcare “Kinderrijk” at number 13 (photo 10). On the left in front of you is the hospital (UMC) and on the right in front of you is VU university. At number 13, cross the street to Botanic Garden Zuidas (photo 11).

In 1956, the first pile went into the ground for the building of the hospital of the Vrije Universiteit (VU). It was opened in 1966 and it was one of the first buildings in Buitenveldert. The hospital has grown now into a large complex of buildings and is called Amsterdam University Medical Centra (UMC), location VU.

Next to the hospital are the buildings of the Vrije Universiteit. In 1973, at the opening of the university’s main building, there were 10,000 students. There are now 30,000 students. For more information see https://vu.nl/en.

The Botanic Garden is the former Hortus Botanicus of the university. The garden can be visited free of charge all week from 09:00 to 17:00 and from April-October also on weekends in the afternoon. More information see https://botanischetuinzuidas.nl/
